Hirman Khairabadi: An enlightened poetess

 By Syeda Naheed Nashtar Khairabadi

Bibi SayyadunisaN, pen name HirmaN Khairabadi was the daughter of Allama Fazle haq Khairabadi. She was encircled by an entire family of great poets. She was the sister of Maulvi Abdul Haq Khairabadi and Maulvi Shamsul Haq khairabadi. She was the wife of Hazrat Haafiz Mohammad Ruswa Khairabadi. She was the mother of two eminant poets: Hazrat Bismil Khairabadi and Hazrat Muztar khairabadi. In addition, she was the grandmother of three great poets: Bartar Khairabadi, Nashtar khairabadi and Janisar Akhtar. She was the great grandmother of  Dr. Shahzad A. Rizvi, Syed Irshad  A. Rizvi, Syed Zia Khairabadi, Syeda Naheed Nashtar Khairabadi, Dr. Syeda Imrana Nashtar Khairabadi, Dr.Syeda Suhela Nashtar Khairabadi, Rukhsana Waseem, Javed Akhtar, Salman Akhtar and many many more  who continued the family poetic tradition.I am proud of her she was my great grandmother.

Mohatrama Hirman Khairabadi was a great scholar of Arabic ,Persian and Urdu. She freely employed Hindi vocabulary in her poetry also. She got her education with his father. She had a great mastery on Urdu metres and poetry. Her sons Bismil khairabadi and Muztar Khairabadi received their initial islaah in poetry by their mother. She was very talented woman of great and fine qualities . Maulana Abdul Haq Khairabadi who was her brother said about her that:

“I am glad that she was a woman and not a man. If she were my brother then I would not have a chance to shine intellectually in front of her. She was such a great mind.”

It is notable that Mohatrama Hirman Khairabadi was an outstanding scholar and poetess in an era when female education was not popular.

She was Sufi by nature; as a result, the colour and tone of her poetry was spiritual. Due to the very sad separation and  early death of her  father Allama Fazle Haq Khairabadi and also death of her husband Hazrat Ruswa Khairabadi much of her poetry  involves deepest feelings of pthos , pang ,and agony. Her  kalaam (poetry) contains some excellent examples  of  Ishq-e Haqeeqi (Spiritual love).See the following asha’ars of her poetry:

دردِ دِل،دردِ جِگر،کاوشِ دِل،کاہِش جاں

اتنے آزار ہیں اور  ایک کلیجا    میرا

اب لذت دردِ جگری پوچھتے  کیا   ہو

جب تُم ہو نمک پاش تو پھِر کیوں نہ مزا ہو
